Continue of notes/thoughts Grace lecture...
Huge words we learned about from Chris were those terms we losely hear about in Christianity. Righteousness, Holiness/sanctification, redemption, justification.
Redemption: Paul says in the Bible,
it's a voucher. It's rights your wrong.
Redemption comes from teh world of slavery. Slaves choose to enter slavery back in those days. People came to be slaves to have a life. They wanted to then be bought at a high price to serve their owner. This then meant once bought, that you were obligated by law, to do what they ought to do. The consequence for not obeying this contract was death. Slaves sometimes became wealthier than their owner back in these days. They earned a lot. They were taken care of. They did quite well. This slave once bought is then obligated to serve. The master has the right to redeem a slave. Some say, "I bought you to redeem you." The master can buy freedom and then he could never return to slavery. If an owner purchases a slave, it's his. If he then tells that slave, you're free. That slave can no longer go back into the market to be sold as a slave for another because they were bought and set free in the contract.
This case of being set 'free' from slavery is extremely rare. I mean come on who would set their slave free after the purpose of one would be to serve you? Often times those slaves who had freedom bought, however, still chose to serve anyways. This was a sign of gratitude. When you're a slave, usually you are feared into serving. Imagine if you're bought and set free, you by hopefully automatically am grateful and would want to serve by choice. This would be seen as a change of heart.
THE HEART IS CHANGED in this process.
Jesus goes into a 'slave market' to US sinners, and He buys us with His life. Not with $. With his LIFE. He payed to set us free. Just like those slaves were bought and set free by their masters back in those days of the Bible.
We never earned it. God just gave 'redemption' for free. We're free, not required to do anything. BUT if we get it and understand that HE bought me to set me free, adopts US, we get to choose to follow and serve. FREE
Just like a grateful slave, we can choose to follow not out of fear or obligation, but out of love.
So Redemption -> being bought out of slavery to set free. Live your life how you want to! Freedom in a choice!
We need to believe that God has rescued us from sin. He 1st loved ME.
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you'll be saved" - That's it. Simple. NOW< it can grow...into this journey.
This really hit me and all in our class. Chris said, if you're getting the feeling that this is almost just too good to be true, then this means you're getting it!
Are you living as a slave?
or
Are you living as a redeemed slave?
